    Wordpress & Youtube

My apologies in advance for all the technical jargon.

My blog is self-hosted, meaning I own the domain and buy the space from Brinkster. Then I installed WordPress and make the magic happen.

Well today, I was trying to add my blog to my YouTube account so I could post videos automatically to rvaYM. I had a little trouble, until I encountered this fantastic tutorial:

So many thanks to Tom from the Down Under for making it happen!

WHY DOWNLOADING FIREFOX IS LIKE GETTING INTO COLLEGE

Somebody else linked to this yesterday, and I was amused and interested. How could downloading my own personal web browser of choice be like getting into college? This Firefox thing is a piece of cake compared to what I had to do to get into college, much less graduate:

Why downloading Firefox is like getting into college

A quick glimpse at just about any profession shows you that the vast majority of people who succeed professionally also went to college.

This could be because college teaches you a lot.

Or it could be because the kind of person that puts the effort into getting into and completing college is also the kind of person who succeeds at other things.

    Firefox is similar.

    Read on…

Macs come with Safari, and PCs come with Internet Explorer. Seth is saying that it takes effort and persistence to make Firefox your browser of choice, so only the most dedicated of computer users would make it happen.

Seth says only the most dedicated students will achieve the prerequisites to go to college, apply to college and finish college are the same kind of people who would download Firefox. Interesting.

    EVERYTHING MUST CHANGE

I just got a message on Facebook from my first youth pastor. I knew he had been working on a new project for a while, but didn’t know what it was. He’s been working behind the scenes on EverythingMustChange.org. I haven’t had a chance to read Brian McLaren’s new book, which the site is based around, but I’ve heard great things. Kind of exciting to know the behind-the-scenes guys…

    BROKEN iPOD

Over the past few months, my iPod has been acting strangely. I deduced that the hard drive was on its last leg, and gave it a little tech CPR a few times. My patience finally ran out, and I realized it was time to move on. I posted the broken iPod on eBay, fully disclosing its brokenness (including these pictures of the sad face!) and darned it if the thing didn’t sell within 24 hours for the Buy It Now price.

    Broken iPod: $40.
    Shipping & handling: $5.95
Having a broken iPod to give someone for Christmas: priceless

For high quality gifts at Christmas, there’s the Apple store. For everything else, even when it’s broken, there’s eBay

    text messaging from e-mail.

A fellow youth minister asked this morning how best to communicate to students and parents. It’s expensive to snail mail, a lot of our students don’t have or check e-mail, some parents don’t want their students on Myspace/Facebook. So how about cell phones? Nearly every student has one, so how can we use them efficiently and inexpensively?

Cell phone companies have dedicated e-mail addresses for each cell phone. [That's kind of scary to think that spammers could get through to our cell phones so easily!] Now we can tap into that by creating a mailing list in our e-mail program with our students cell numbers entered as an e-mail address. Here’s how:

    Image Not Loaded.
And a link to more carriers: HERE

A few things to remember… Text messages can only have 160 characters–so keep it short! If someone replies to you and you want to reply, be sure to clear out the message window so the original message doesn’t count toward your 160 characters.

There is a downside: you have to find out what carrier each of your students has. For our youth group, I know what most of them have–but we aren’t very big. An extra step, but it’ll save some money. There are computer programs out there to send text messages from your computer if you only know the phone number, but you can only send one at a time. This way you get a mailing list message sent out to all your students from the comfort of your e-mail system. Please post a comment if you have an update, or a mobile service provider that I missed. Or if you have an even easier solution!

    PSA.

Someone hacked into my eBay account tonight. Thanks to some quick work on the web, Keanu at eBay Live Help and a slow hacker, I’m back on my own with no unwanted guests. Check out eBay’s Security Center for help on staying safe. If an e-mail from eBay looks phishy, it might be. And if you open up your web browser and the URL isn’t ebay.com, get away. Get far, far away! Thus endeth the Public Service Announcement.
